Active volcanoes, erupting geysers, hot springs, lava fields, massive glaciers, tremulous waterfalls and, of course, the spectacular Northern Lights are all ingredients that make Iceland’s Ring Road one of the most romantic road trips in the world. Route 1, as it is also known, circumnavigates this atmospheric Nordic island’s most populated areas.

Natural hot springs and geothermal pools cover the island. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous. Lake Myvatn Nature Baths or the relatively unknown Seljavallalaug swimming pool offer a less touristy and more intimate dip in scenic surroundings.

For a great photo opportunity take a walk around the 60m Seljalandsfoss waterfall to admire the deluge from inside the cave behind the falls.

10: The Basque Circuit, Spain & France

The route passes through the Rioja wine region, where the futuristic architecture of the wineries, such as Bodegas Marques de Riscal, is as enticing as their produce.

Make a stop in hip San Sebastian to visit a pintxo bar and sample Gilda, the city’s signature anchovies, pepper and olive pintxo dish, accompanied with a glass of the effervescent Basque wine, Txakoli.
