Hi! I’m Becky Harris and thank you for taking a look at Curious Travel. I founded the Curious Travel Company in 2017  to inspire people to travel curiously, connectedly and consciously, embracing unique experiences in collaboration with local communities.

“I’m on a mission to get others curious about the world, its culture and people.”

Before you entrust your travel planning with me and my team I’m sure you want to know what my travel and business credentials are…

I am perhaps most proud of the time I spent living in Latin America and Guatemala in particular. In 2001 I set up Viaventure, that became an award-winning and internationally renowned tour operator/DMC. We pioneered socially responsible, luxury and adventure bespoke travel in a destination that up to that point was thought of as “dangerous.” In fact, it was merely misunderstood and underrepresented. We grew to a staff of 50 people and focussed heavily on staff development and “giving back” and started the Viaventure Foundation.

Here I am giving a presentation to our staff on our 10-year anniversary celebration trip to Uaxactun in the Guatemala rainforest. You can spot my daughter in the bottom left.

In 2009 I left Viaventure to follow my passion of trying to help smaller travel organisations in remote locations to develop their businesses. I launched a range of enterprises including Travel Kinship consultancy services to help small travel businesses grow profitably, sustainably and ethically. The software platform, SquirrelFish, facilitates seamless networking and marketing resources sharing within the travel industry. Warrior Princess is a social enterprise for the empowerment of girls and women around the world.

“We want to show you what the world has to offer, maybe even challenge you a little to try something a bit different each time you travel and do our very best to create a positive impact to the people and communities where you travel to.”

So how did I get there? How did I go from being a reluctant mechanical engineer to a travel industry guru?

I followed a desire for travel and helping people. It was a desire that made me give up a stable career in engineering and move halfway across the world to work for Save the Children in Columbia, then Peru. It was a desire to see more of the world and have an adventure. It led me to buy a used car in Guatemala whilst en route from Peru and drive it through Mexico, the USA and all the way to Toronto. I was stuck in 3rd gear for some of southern Mexico and wasn’t sure I would make it.

Me as a baby in Ghana, Africa. As you can see I always fancied myself as a road trip expert!

I, of course, am a big traveller myself. From an early age touring Europe every year as a cellist in a youth orchestra, living in Ghana until the age of 5, taking my first solo trip to Holland at 13, studying in Spain for a year, working in Malaysia, Holland, L.A., Peru and Guatemala. Travel has always been a major part of my life. I have travelled the world extensively, mostly solo or with my daughter who, at 10 years old has been to over 25 countries. Now, with Curious Travel, I’m on a mission to get others curious about the world, its culture and people.

Read about one of my favourite travel experiences on a Flying Safari along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, “E on the petrol gauge stands for enough.”

My daughter and I staying in a desert camp in Wadi Rum in Jordan. A favourite family destination.

I think I have a passion that builds successful and ethical companies whose aim is to delight our customers and look after our staff and suppliers. We want to show you what the world has to offer, maybe even challenge you a little to try something a bit different each time you travel and do our very best to create a positive impact to the people and communities where you travel to.

Thank you for reading and wishing you fun, happy and uplifting travels.
